Gender and Sexuality Institute for Educators

Celebrating differences and challenging biases

June 15-17, 2020
Atlanta, GA

Our experience of gender is a fundamental aspect of how we see the world. Young people need to incorporate characteristics from all along the spectrum to develop healthy identities, and they need competent teachers to guide the way!

In the Gender and Sexuality Institute for Educators, we’ll explore the impact of gendered experiences in childhood and beyond. We’ll investigate the dynamics of cisgender identity development, LGBTQ issues, and how educators can help students  navigate this sensitive terrain.

Please join us in Atlanta, June 15-17, for dynamic conversations about gender identity, sexual orientation, sexuality and consent.

Develop valuable skills:

  • Nurture and strengthen healthy identity development in your students.
  • Create identity-safe classrooms and inclusive school communities.
  • Facilitate dynamic discussions in a safe and empathetic environment.
  • Teach valuable communication, critical thinking, and writing skills.
  • Counteract bias and harmful stereotypes.
  • Cultivate supportive ally relationships among students.
  • Explore your own gender experience to better serve your students.
  • Develop a supportive professional community for ongoing growth and development.

If you’re interested in having an authentic conversation about gender identity and expression in children, please join us.

The Institute directors, Eddy Hernandéz and Martha Caldwell, consult with schools on diversity, equity and inclusion education to help them create cultures of belonging. Eddy and Martha worked together for many years at the Paideia School, where they collaborated on gender education programming and have co-directed the gender and sexuality component of iChange Collaborative’s Summer Diversity Institute since 2013. They expertly guide conversations rarely broached yet utterly compelling in their potential to stimulate growth and change.

The Institute is open to teachers of all disciplines and grade levels, as well as diversity directors, admissions directors, counselors, department heads, and community organizers. Educators will leave the Institute with renewed enthusiasm and commitment, but also with action plans and lesson plans they can put into effect immediately.

Previous attendees have called iChange Collaboratives Teaching Institutes “transformative,” “profound,” and “a significant professional growth process.”

If you know of teachers, counselors, administrators or staff who can benefit from this important and timely professional development opportunity, please pass this information along.
